# Quickstart

> Make your first authenticated request.

## Create a key

Complete individual or corporate verification first. All API keys, including sandbox keys, require approval. Before approval, use the sandbox console.

Open Developers in your company console, select the sandbox environment, and create a key with `balance:read`. Store it on your server.

## Read your balance

Set `PLANE_API_KEY` to your sandbox key in your server environment, then run:

```

The response contains `available`, `held`, and `environment`. The environment is determined by the API key. Money values are decimal strings.

## Next steps

To issue a card, create a cardholder, get the available product catalog, request a quote, and submit an operation using the quoted total. Follow the operation until it reaches its final status.

A successfully accepted operation is not proof that a card has been issued. See [operation lifecycle](/operation-lifecycle).
